He reads it and discovers that the prospector is none other than his own foster brother whom he has been unable to recognize on account of the change in features brought about by time. In a dissolving scene it is registered that his brother has, at a time ten years previous, committed the crime of killing John's father and then by a clever ruse fastening the crime upon the innocent John. For this John is sent to prison for life, but manages to escape and make his way to his old home, which he finds in the hands of strangers. He seeks for his mother and finds her grave. Here the illusion ends and he realizes that at last he has the real criminal in his power and is at liberty to wreak fitting vengeance upon him. He returns to his cabin, examines his revolver and enters, only to find that the foster-brother has died in his absence, bearing out the old quotation, "Vengeance Is Mine."

They bleed Hull of his fortune, and Mary goes from bad to worse, until she discovers that the man she hates is the father of two little daughters whom he dearly loves. She then gives back part of the money to Mrs. Hull and the children, finally confessing to Hull that she has ruined him simply to get her revenge.

She has, unfortunately, given herself to the profligate, Arguello, who abandons her. Chapo takes her to his own poor quarters and cares for her. Two years later she dies, and the hunchback, still rising in the world of art, adopts the two-year-old daughter. The scene advances twenty years. Chapo, the once neglected and despised, is a giant in the world of Parisian art and the adopted daughter has grown to be a beautiful young woman. They return to the old home, and there is Arguello, living a cumberer of the ground in his old age of vice, cards and liquor. He still has eyes and be leers upon the fair young flower leaning on the arm of Chapo. The indignant old padre calls on Arguello exclaiming, "she is your child." The shock and shame finally overcome him and he dies on the spot.
- A bank president, who has been indulging in high finance, suddenly receives word that the examiners are preparing to visit his institution. Realizing that an inspection at this time means ruin to himself, the banker by altering the books makes it appear that the shortage in the funds is due to crooked work on the part of the paying teller. The unfortunate teller is arrested and sent to prison for a period of years. The teller has a wife and child, and, after he is arrested, poverty and suffering come upon them. The child grows weaker and finally dies. The wife, blaming the bank president, whom she intuitively suspects of crooked work, vows to be revenged, but a priest, who has called to comfort her, appeals to her religious faith, reminding her that vengeance is the Lord's. After the baby's death, the wife becomes a trained nurse and, through a strange chance, is assigned to a private case, of a man who is near death in a hotel. To her amazement she recognized in her patient the banker who had changed her life from joy to sorrow. Left alone with the invalid, she watched him closely and rejoiced to note that his case was approaching a crisis and, unless carefully tended, he was certain to die. The medicine that should be administered to him was close at hand, but she refused to give it, gloating over her enemy as he lay helpless before her. But she was saved from a crime she would have been certain to have regretted all her life. At the critical moment the emblem of her faith was recalled to her mind, and she remembered the word of her good pastor. "Vengeance Is Mine, Saith the Lord." With a prayer for forgiveness she again became the devoted nurse and gave all her energy to saving the life of the man she hated. The crisis was passed successfully, and the doctor greatly rejoiced. He told his patient that he greatly owed his life to his nurse and the banker feebly called her over so he could thank her. Then for the first time came recognition. He realized that the woman he had wronged had saved his miserable life. And full of remorse he made what amends he could. The banker's confession resulted in the teller's pardon. The wife took the precious paper to the prison, received her husband with joy and thankfulness, and, hand in hand, they left the gloomy penitentiary to take up a new and happier life.

- Reconciled with Red Eric is murdered in a busy market , witnessed by Susan, who cannot identify the killer. They were suspects in the murder of loan shark John Hardy two years earlier but DCI Charlie MacIntyre released them and instead Davor Pasovic was convicted, protesting his innocence. Davor's brother Alexi is brought in but smooth lawyer Daniel Jameson ensures that no case is made against him and Red has cause to ask Charlie if he framed Davor purely to secure a conviction. Philip Stansfield is electrocuted by a railway line, the same location where Felicity Oldroyd was murdered. DI David Wilby arrested her married lover Des Braithwaite, who again claimed his innocence but Red finds out that Stansfield was also seeing her and lied about knowing her. Red believes that the victims were the true killers in the old cases being rubbed out by an avenger. However when Charlie's daughter Mandy is garrotted with a cheese wire Red believes that the killer is also out to punish police officers who made fatally wrong arrests and warns all his staff that their nearest and dearest are in danger.
